Mississippi Area Codes and Telephone Numbering

Originally served by a single area code (601) in 1947, Mississippi's telephone numbering plan has evolved into several regions and overlay complexes to meet the growing demand for telecommunication services.

Northern Mississippi: Area Codes 662 & 471

  • Coverage: The northern half of the state, including the Memphis metro area (Benton, Coahoma, Desoto, Marshall, Tate, and Tunica counties), Oxford (Ole Miss), and Starkville (Mississippi State).
  • Current Status: Area code 662 requires mandatory 10-digit dialing as of October 2021.
  • Upcoming Relief: Due to exhaustion, area code 471 will be added as an overlay. Network preparation begins April 30, 2025, with an expected in-service date of January 30, 2026.

Central and Southern Mississippi: Area Codes 601 & 769

  • Coverage: Central and southern portions of the state, including the Jackson metropolitan area (excluding the three Gulf Coast counties).
  • Current Status: This region functions as an overlay complex. Area code 769 was added to the original 601 area in 2005, making 10-digit dialing mandatory.

Mississippi Gulf Coast: Area Code 228

  • Coverage: The southeastern tip of the state, specifically Hancock, Harrison, and Jackson counties (including Biloxi and Gulfport).
  • Current Status: Split from 601 in 1997. Exhaustion is unlikely for the foreseeable future.
